Clinical Study

The Hair Cycle
The hair cycle has 3 phases:
Anagen in which the hair grows actively.
Catagen in which the hair stops growing.
Telogen in which the hair falls off.
In the hair bulb, there is a mix of molecules regulated by the dermal papilla cells that change from phase to phase, and causes the transition from one phase to the next. When there is an imbalance in the cycle, hair loss accelerates, and the dermal papilla cells enter a latent, inactive state, stopping the processes of creation of new hairs and starting a new hair cycle.

Insulin Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1)
Dermal papilla cells segregate molecules, including growth factors such as IGF-1, which stimulates the follicle development maintaining the Anagen phase and postponing the entrance into the Catagen phase. It is also essential for the growth and differentiation of follicles. CAPILIA LONGA increases its production of this factor in the dermal papilla.
miRNAs
In both plants, animals and humans, microRNAs (miRNAs) are key elements for the modulation of organism development, and in hair growth, their crucial role has just been recently discovered: they are involved in the control of each cycle phase and regulate the transition between phases when targeting different signaling pathways and transcription factors. About 200miRNAs are engaged in the different stages, but two are especially important for the hair follicle: miRNA-31 and miRNA-22.

Its expression is intense and exclusive in the Anagen phase. It controls diverse signaling routes related to cell differentiation and hair formation. It promotes the follicle’s transition from the Telogen to Anagen phase, and if inhibited, the Catagen phase starts.
